Gambling and Sports Betting Law in Austria

Gambling and sports betting law defines the legal framework for games of chance on the one hand, and for bookmaker and totalisator betting on the other. Unlike in other EU Member States — and also under EU law itself — sports betting in Austria is not classified as gambling. As a result, it does not fall under federal jurisdiction, but rather under the legislative and administrative competence of the individual provinces (Länder). In addition to the Federal Gambling Act (Glücksspielgesetz), there are thus nine separate provincial Sports Betting Acts (Sportwettengesetze).
