2nd Symposium: Austrian Gambling and Sports Betting Law

On 15 and 16 January, we were delighted to welcome you to our second Vienna Symposium on (Austrian) gambling and sports betting law, organised jointly with the Institute for Constitutional and Administrative Law at the University of Vienna.

Firstly, we would like to thank you, and in particular all the speakers, for your interest and active participation, as well as the lively discussions and the food for thought we have developed together.

A brief review:

On the first half-day, Associate Professor Dr Gerhard Muzak, Attorney Dr Jörg Hofmann and Attorney Dr Simon Planzer discussed the various options for the awarding of (gambling) licences in the DACHL region in their presentations, thus laying the foundation for the lively panel discussion.

After a refreshing snack, Mr Gustav Trefil, Dr Dietmar Klose, HR Wilfried Lehner and Associate Professor Dr Christian Piska went into detail and not only examined the different requirements for the granting of Austrian (sports) betting licences, but also highlighted practical aspects of combating the illegal market and possible infringements of EU law in the current Austrian legal situation. The crowning finale of the second half-day was the presentation by Mr em. Our heartfelt thanks go to Dr Monika Racek and all the panellists!

Following on from this, Hubert Reisner examined the awarding of gambling licences from a procedural perspective on the third half-day and Stefanie Bardach took a critical look at the publication of information relating to licensing procedures. With his summarising review of the year 2025 and outlook for 2026, Dr Walter Schwartz not only closed the second symposium, but also opened the doors wide for next year. With this in mind:

Look forward with us to the next Vienna Symposium!
