From the idea to the symbol: Our logo journey

SHMP Logo

Our logo was designed in 2004 by the renowned artist, printmaker and typographer Freimut Steiger (1938–2018), who was born in Austria but lived most of his life in Paris. Freimut Steiger firmly believed that thoughts must be presented in a way that communicates their content directly and without loss of meaning. For this reason, his work focused on finding or inventing the font, font colour, line and letter spacing, and graphic representation that would enable the viewer to recognise the thoughts presented as quickly and easily as possible. Freimut Steiger also became internationally known for the plan he designed for the famous Parisian cemetery for celebrities. Père Lachaise and which realises all his typographic goals in an ideal way.

Our logo should also stand for content - and not just appear simple and elegant. Freimut Steiger was inspired by the Postsparkasse bank created by Otto Wagner, in the immediate vicinity of which our first office was located (A-1010 Vienna, Stubenring 2). The dots in our logo are modelled on the 17,000 aluminium bolts that adorn the Art Nouveau façade of the Postsparkasse and stand for resilience and security, among other things (https://blog.mak.at/otto-wagner-postsparkasse/). Today they enable us to make the claim „Score points with us!“.

The rows and columns of our logo appear to form a square, but deliberately do not (ten rows, eleven columns). Both the number of rows and the number of columns are based on the name of our founding partner, whereby the hyphen is „included“ once (eleven) and once - because it is not a letter - „omitted“ (ten). The fact that there are still „blank“ lines is intended to symbolise the openness of our law firm: We want to grow and become bigger, we want many more colleagues to „sign up“ with us.

The (apparent) perfection of the square is broken up by the word „Rechtsanwälte“, which goes beyond the square frame. This is not just a cheeky design element, but rather symbolises the creative part of our work: our legal work should go beyond the end of our noses, we want to be „out of the box“ think.

The art of thinking.
